The course provides the students with the basic concepts, theoretical approaches and implementation practices of spatial planning, utilizing inputs from Greek, European and International case studies.

General learning targets for students, upon completion of the course:

  • Getting familiar with theories of space and planning.
  • Understanding the role of spatial planning and its relationships with the political and governmental system.
  • Understanding basic and new (advanced) regional and urban planning principles.
  • Analyzing issues of space management in a critical way, and assessing the outcomes/impacts of planning implementation.

Skills obtained/improved:

– Searching, analyzing and synthesizing of data and information.

– Decision-making.

– Working in a team/ collaborated learning practices.

– Cultivate ways of free, creative and inductive reasoning.

– Promoting of interdisciplinary approaches.

The course topics are developed as follows:

  1. Defining the content, role, and scope of spatial planning, distinction between regional planning and urban planning
  2. Defining the ‘real’ objects and territorial units of spatial development:
  3. Spatial planning systems in Europe
  4. Theories of spatial planning
  5. Evolution of approaches to urban planning
  6. Planning considerations for the Euro-Mediterranean city and compromise planning
  7. Sustainable urban development, cities, environment, and climate change
  8. Contemporary planning perspectives driven by innovation: Smart cities, Digital cities

Assessment and evaluation of students is based on:

Examination (in writing) (50%)

Three mandatory exercises, processed in teams of 2 students (50%)
