Aris Vartholomaios is Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at the Department of Planning and Regional Development (DPRD), University of Thessaly (UTh). He holds a Diploma in Rural and Surveying Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh, 2009), an MA in Urban Design from the Joint Centre for Urban Design, Oxford Brookes University (2010, with Distinction), and a PhD in Environmental Urban Design (2016) from the School of Architecture, AUTh.

He has taught at the University of Thessaly, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the International Hellenic University and IAAC Barcelona, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, both as sole instructor and as part of teaching teams. His teaching spans a broad range of subjects related to urban planning, street layout plans (ρυμοτομικό), plan implementation acts and environmental design.

His research is anchored in the core of urban planning and planning design: the statutory instruments of planning and their implementation (building regulations, street layout plans, plan implementation acts, urban regeneration studies) and the organisation of urban space at the local scale. He examines the environmental performance of these regulations (climate‑responsive urban form, microclimate, energy) as a criterion of planning quality, using digital methods (GIS, simulation, machine learning/AI) to support evidence‑based planning decisions. He is a former IKY–Siemens scholar and has received the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Seal of Excellence and an Honorary Distinction from the Technical Chamber of Greece.
