The main objective of the course is to comprehensively address theoretical issues, in close relation to real world practice and applications, with an added emphasis in the spatial dimension, mainly as conceived in the fields of Urban and Regional planning. The basic axes of the course address the typologies of the theories of space and planning.

Students acquire the critical knowledge necessary to assess the relative position, pertinence and efficiency of approaches, methods and techniques employed in both the analysis and planning of the production of space, more specifically the space as conceived in urban and regional planning, importantly within the framework of the specific socio-economic formation as it is structured and evolving anytime in its history. Students acquire the ability to comprehend specific instances of the functioning and evolution of actual space and to evaluate specific cases to apply specific programmes, plans and designs attempting to steer the evolution and control the organization of space.

Among the themes covered are the conceptualization of space, the production of space, and the evolution and development of schools or trends in the theories of planning and in planning practice. Topics covered include ‘comprehensive planning’, advocacy planning and related social issues-sensitive trends like equity planning, critical or radical theories, the influence of systems theory and structuralism, the question of place identity, the question of ethical and moral issues, the semeiotic dimension, and the question of complexity and chaos in the production of space and in planning.
