Research – Unit of Infrastructure, Technology Policy and Development

Profile

The Research Unit of Infrastructure, Technology Policy and Development (RUITEPOD) was established in 1996 (P.D. 286/ 96, Government Gazette Α/200/ 27-8-96) in the Department of Planning and Regional Development, University of Thessaly, Greece. RUITEPOD, concentrates mainly on research and education in the fields of analysis, planning, management and evaluation of technical, economic and social infrastructure, with emphasis in technology policy, innovation and entrepreneurship. More specifically, its fields of interest include (but are not limited to):

    • Innovation and Entrepreneurship

At the international level, the unit’s research activity includes, among others, ongoing international cooperation with Universities and Institutes, such as the OMEGA Centre for Mega Projects in Transport and Development (UCL, London) and the Varna University of Management. In the field of entrepreneurship and innovation, RUITEPOD has carried out consulting and research projects and has also created and supports the Unit for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IEU) which is responsible for the entrepreneurship education and promotion across the University of Thessaly.

Activity

The main activity of the Research Unit, concerns issues of local and regional development, infrastructure planning and development (with emphasis on transport), technological policy and innovation / entrepreneurship and is structured in three main areas: research activities, educational activities at the University of Thessaly and other educational activities.

RUITEPOD’s research activity concerns, to a large extent, the participation of the Research Unit and its members in local, national and international / European research programs. At European level, the Laboratory participates in Erasmus +, BalkanMed, SMART, EQUAL, RECITE (ECOSERT), RIS, INNOREGIO, INEVAL / Leonardo etc., partnering up with Educational Institutions and other bodies / agencies all over Europe and Asia.

At local / national level, RUITEPOD participated in the implementation of research projects such as the Study for the Connection of Higher Education with the Labor Market through the Promotion of Entrepreneurship (Ministry of Education), studies for the ports of Katakolo and Thessaloniki, the Strategic Management of Airport  Infrastructure of the Regions of Western Greece and Peloponnese, the Transport Network of the Prefecture of Magnesia (LIFE) and others, while at the local level, RUITEPOD has implemented a significant number of development, operational and other Programs (Municipalities of Skiathos, Skopelos, Karla, Iolkos, Southern Pelion, Municipality of Volos, Prefecture of Magnesia, etc.).

Regarding the educational activity of RUITEPOD, the members of the Research Unit cover the teaching needs of a significant number of courses of the curriculum of the Department of Planning and regional Development, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. RUITEPOD also supports the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of the University of Thessaly. In addition to teaching, the members of the Laboratory provide substantial support to the Department by supporting doctoral dissertations and postgraduate and undergraduate theses, as well as providing data and making the Laboratory equipment available to undergraduate and postgraduate students for their projects.

Finally, the Research Unit has organized or implemented other educational activities in the field of Research Programs or collaborations with other Educational institutions or bodies.

In addition to these, on an individual basis, members of RUITEPOD have given numerous international seminars and training sessions across the world either as part of international research projects, or in their individual academic capacity.

Partners

HELIX Network – Transnational Exchange Network in Sustainable Hospitality

The network has 1 central unit and 5 contact points – on the premises of each partner institution. It concerns the cooperation between 4 University Institutions and business Organizations from Greece, Albania, Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria. RUITEPOD is one of the 5 contact points of the Network (http://www.helix-balkanmed.eu/organization-and-structure/).

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of the University of Thessaly (MOKE UTh)

The members of the Research Unit have contributed significantly, both in the design and in the implementation and operation of MOKE UTh, while RUITEPOD maintains systematic cooperation with MOKE through joint activities, but also through the participation of its members in the teaching activities of MOKE UTh (https://moke.uth.gr/).

The Research Unit has the necessary hardware, software and other equipment that are necessary for the implementation of its research, teaching and other activities. In more detail, RUITEPOD has:

  • Software that meets modern research and educational needs (statistical processing, word processing, cartography, etc.).
  • Access to data and information that are necessary for its activities (articles and magazines, databases, other knowledge bases, etc.).
