General objectives – General learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to contribute to an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of Project Management and how they are applied in the management, organization and planning of private or public projects and investments. The theoretical part of the course aims at analyzing and describing the basic principles of project management, as well as description the basic methodologies of management, planning and appraisal. It also describes the methodologies and ways of planning, organizing and managing projects in a rational way, with the aim of understanding the processes of reducing production costs, execution time and achieving greater productivity in the project implementation process of various forms. Part of the exercises apply the methodologies taught in the theoretical part and solve real problems using mostly “real” sizes, so as to become familiar with the practice and gain a sense of the real sizes.

Knowledges

Students have been familiar with the key concepts, theories and methodologies of project management as evidenced by successful work preparation and final examination.

Skills

Students at the end of the course have acquired the ability to apply knowledge to real problems, as evidenced by their exam performance. They can apply modern methods for completing tasks and solving problems related to project management.

Abilities

The course helps students to acquire the following general abilities:

  • Ability to manage projects and implement the relevant execution methodologies at the lowest possible cost in the shortest time with the best possible quality.
  • Ability to search and find the right elements and variables needed to manage a project, plan the project efficiently, write the appropriate schedules and optimize costs.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data and information collected to draw appropriate conclusions about how to manage a project.
  • Ability to approach project management by understanding the relevant concepts and benefits of the work.
  • Ability to apply the knowledge gained in the lessons learned in the previous semesters and to plan the projects studied in the previous semesters.
  • Ability to make constructive criticism while attending course and assignments and writing real-time study.
  • Ability to develop creative and inductive thinking, through the design of a study that applies the project planning methodologies.

The general abilities that students should have acquired in the course are aimed at developing creative and inductive thinking through analyzing the problems of project management, their association with relevant approaches and more generally.

Also, in the development of a creative reflection that is raised and formulated during the semester in which students are involved and for which they are invited to propose applied and reasoned solutions.

  1. Introduction to project programming and cost planning: Gantt chart, S curve, equilibrium lines, applications to technical projects.
  2. Network analysis and CPM and PERT methodologies.
  3. Tolerances on the CPM and PERT chart.
  4. Checking the progress of a project with the help of Network analysis.
  5. Basic statistical concepts, Beta distribution, Probability analysis of time planning using PERT methodology, Applications.
  6. Introduction to Operational Research, optimization problem solving, graphical solution.
  7. Linear programming, description and implementation of the Simplex method.
  8. The transportation problem, analysis of basic solution methodologies, Stepping – Stone method,
  9. The problem of assignments, the problem solving methodology
  10. Description of Ms Project and Primavera software.

The evaluation criteria used are linked to the learning outcomes, since the students’ ability to show their knowledge and depth of understanding of the core content of the course is indirectly assessed.

The assessment system and criteria are familiar to the students, and they are considered sufficient to reflect the degree of understanding of the course and in-depth knowledge of its content.

The examination process is assessed indirectly, since students are asked to comment after the exams are over. In addition students can view their writing if they wish and find out what mistakes they have made and to comment on them.
