Undergraduate Programme

Urban Physical Planning Studio IIb

Course goal

This course focuses to skills and abilities. Acquiring knowledge is only a secondary objective, and from this point of view the course is based upon basic knowledge learned in previous courses and semesters. More specifically:
The students are supposed to get factual information regarding the plans and policies of different kind which influence urban planning. Among the skills that the students will obtain are the application of a specific methodology and the official prescriptions for the preparation of general urban plans (with an emphasis on propositions and actions) as well as the comparison of these prescriptions with those of similar plans in other countries. As for the more general abilities the students are expected to acquire, they comprise the critical evaluation of the official prescriptions taking into account on the one hand the experience from their application and on the other hand the existing theoretical framework.

Course subject

The course has applied character and consists in the preparation of a project by group of students, concerning the revision of existing (enacted) or the elaboration of the proposal part of new urban level plans, for areas of relatively large scale. It is based on the Greek legal framework and planning practices, but it takes also into account the international experience.
The course of the current academic year (2013-2014) concerns the revision of the existing General Urban Plan of Nikaia (Thessaly).
This lesson is closely related to the course of the winter academic semester “Urban Planning Studio IIa” which constitutes from a methodological point of view its introduction. Moreover, there is co-ordination with the course of  “Spatial Planning Studio IIb”.
