Undergraduate Programme

Statistics

Course goal

The main objective of this course is to provide to the students the opportunity to understand the basic principles and important methods of statistical analysis, necessary knowledge for understanding, amongst others, the demographic, socio-economic and spatial phenomena.
The course offers the opportunity to learn the procedures relative to the collect of data while emphasis is given to the interpretation and validity of the results.
Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to collect appropriate data for the implementation of focused works and studies and better understand the usefulness of quantitative methods for (a) the analysis of socio -economic and spatial phenomena and (b) the decision making process.
More specifically, this course aims to contribute to:
1. acquire the proven knowledge and understanding of statistical and econometric methods of analysis relative to socio-economic phenomena that have spatial dimension
2. Obtain - through the systematic application of relevant methods - the necessary aptitude of adjustment to research procedures, specifically as regards the collect the treatment and the interpretation of reliable spatial data
3. Acquire skills related to the development of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of complex data reflecting specific concepts
4. Participate to the advancement of the knowledge society

Course subject

Statistics is the science whose main objective is the development of methods which allow (1) the collect of data, (2) their treatment, (3) the appropriate presentation (tables, graphs) and finally (4) the analysis and interpretation of information (data) relative to the characteristics and behavior of real phenomena (socio-economic, demographic, environmental etc). The analysis of empirical data - through theoretical models – contribute to produce useful results in order to better understand the laws governing the phenomena under consideration and support the decision-making process with practical content.
The course includes the following topics:
• Basic concepts, contribution of Statistics in the scientific fields of Planning and Regional Development, main sources of data (ELSTAT, Eurostat, etc)
• The concept of probability, Axiomatic Foundations
• Conditional probabilities, Independent event
• Functions of random variables, Functions of probability and distribution
• Statistical parameters, Distributions’ characteristics, special discrete and continuous distributions, Central Limit Theorem
• Random sample and sampling distributions
• Estimators and Confidence interval
• Tests of statistical hypotheses
• Analysis of categorical data
• Test of adjustment with X2 criterion
• Simple and multiple linear regression
