The module aims to provide students with an in depth understanding of how cities and urban landscapes change to address shifts in economy; it helps students to broaden their knowledge and develop their abilities to understand and critically analyse complex urban issues.
Knowledge is (a) imparted through lecture course and (b) developed through individual project work. The course includes attendance at a series of tutorials and reviews.
This module involves urban transformations in the postindustrial cities and the emerging new urban landscapes reflecting major shifts in urban economies. The module draws from cities and regions of mature economies as well as cities in the economic periphery of Europe; it focuses on the case of Greek cities.
The main theme of the module shifts every academic year. In the academic year 2011-12, the main theme was ‘shrinking cities’ reflecting a major negative aspect of Greek cities due to the economic crisis. In the academic year 2012-13, the main theme was ‘smart cities’ and all their possible smart dimensions – smart environment, smart governance, smart mobility, smart entrepreneurship, smart people.
