The course intends to develop a critical thinking towards the major theoretical and practical issues of planning.
The aim of this course is to both deepen in theoretical aspects and pursue the connection of theory to spatial planning practice.
More specifically, the course intends to the following learning outcomes: the acquisition of specialized knowledge on planning and space theories, the understanding of theories and concepts related to them, the analysis of theoretical texts and proposals and the critical review of the outcomes generated by the application of theories in real space .
Taking into account the general competencies pursued in the Postgraduate Programme (as listed in the Diploma Supplement), the course contributes to the acquisition of the following:
– Research, analysis and synthesis of data and information, using the essential technologies,
-Team working,
– Working in an international and interdisciplinary environment,
– Generating new research ideas
– Critical thinking
– Promotion of free, creative and inductive thinking
The subjects covered by the course concern the theoretical approaches to spatial planning on the scales of the city, the metropolitan area and the region. Indicatively the course analyzes and presents the following aspects:
planning and space typologies and theories, the evolution of the urban planning ‘schools’, comprehensive planning, systems theory, structuralism, radical theories, liberal theories, pragmatism – realism, equity planning, postmodernism and new urbanism, new urban landscapes of the postindustrial city, the connection between urban morphology and urban tourism, the concept of place identity in the era of a globalized economy and of a multicultural society, space – time relation, communicative rationality – collaborative planning, complexity / chaos theory, planning and the markets, moral values, space and semiotics, the representation of the city in cinema.
