New Online Master’s Course during the spring semester 2021-2022
In the framework of the implementation of the program “Rur’Up -Innovative education for sustainable development in peripheral rural areas” [Erasmus+], a selective course is proposed to Masters’ students and PhD students.

Context:
Based on a partnership between
University of Thessaly (UTH-Greece), Centre international des Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Méditerranéennes- Institut Agronomique Méditerranéen de Montpellier (CIHEAM IAMM- France), University of Helsinki (UH- Finland), University of National and World Economy (UNWE-Bulgaria), University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj Napoca (USAMV-Cluj Napoca –Romania), Galway- Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT- Ireland) and University of Osijek (UNIOS-Croatia)
this online course allows students to have a meaningful intercultural learning experience on Rural Planning Studies. This course benefits from the diversity in the background and nationality of the teaching team and aims to create for the students from different countries and cultures a dynamic and interactive educational experience.
Course description:
The course introduces students to the critical role of Peripheral Rural Areas in achieving rural vitality across European rural regions. Their sustainable development maintains and enhances environment, rural heritage and biodiversity while improving socio-economic conditions of diverse rural actors.
In this course, you will broaden your understanding of the social, environmental, and economic characteristics of peripheral rural areas. You will learn to recognize the needs and opportunities for sustainable development in those areas. Above all, you will engage with key elements of the participatory innovation process, and with diverse innovations as solutions to modern challenges. You will get to work with real life examples of innovation process in Finland and across the EU.
Due to the fact that this course concerns students registered in universities of seven different countries, they will also learn to participate and collaborate in international groups as well as integrate the cultural diversity in their approach on Urban Studies.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course students
- will have a broad understanding of social, environmental and economic characteristics of peripheral rural areas, and recognise vulnerabilities of these areas
- will recognize needs and opportunities for sustainable development in peripheral rural areas
- will distinguish the stages and key elements of the innovation process
- will have an awareness of the variety of existing innovations relevant to their own country and across the EU
- will practice collaborative work online and in English
Structure of the course:
The course is an asynchronous teaching for the whole class, students are expected to spend time on independent work, collective peer to peer discussions and individual learning (81h all together).
Course’s Accreditation: 3 ECTs
Certificate of successful attendance: Finalizing and handing in assignments duly and according to schedule is a condition for the validation of the course. At the end of the semester and after the successful attendance of the course, each student will be awarded a Certificate of successful attendance (Erasmus+ certificate).
This course acts as an introductory for a summer course that will be held in Greece during the summer 2022. A successful completion will allow you to take part in the summer school with the costs covered by the project. You can opt for completing only the online course.
Final Registration / Motivation Letter:
The number of students by Institution is limited to 10-15.
- candidates will be asked to send until 10 March to their national team their CV and a motivation letterin which they will have to mention their preference to the course.
- on the basis of the motivation letter, it will be possible to proceed to the final selection of the students
